Color up - When
a player exchanges smaller denomination chips for
larger denomination chips.
Comps - Complimentary gifts given by the casino
to entice players to gamble. Typical comps include
free hotel room, meals and beverages.
Croupier - French word for Dealer, used in
the games of baccarat and roulette.
Designated
Dealer - In
poker games like Texas hold em, the player to
the left of the dealer bets first. In a poker room
where each game has a resident dealer, a different
player serves as the designated dealer for each hand.
Dime
Bet - A $1000 wager.
Dollar Bet - A $100 wager.
Dividend- means the agreed payout or return
on any bet.
Down Card - A face down card.
Dont Come Bet- Craps A bet placed on
the Dont Come Bar. Same rules as the Dont
Pass Line, except placed after the come-out roll.
Dont Pass Bet- Craps A wager placed prior to
the Come-Out Roll that a seven will be rolled before
a point is repeated.
Dont Pass Line-The area on the layout where
Dont Pass Bets are placed.
Double Up- To increase a wager after the first
two cards are drawn.
Double Down To make a second bet on
a players blackjack hand, in which the player
only receives one additional card.
Draw-Where competitors in an event finish evenly.
Where there is a draw and this is not offered as a
betting option, the return will be divided by the
number of joint winners.
Edge
- An advantage over an opponent.
Edge-The casinos advantage.
Even Money- When the player has a blackjack
and the dealer has an ace showing, a payout offered
before the hole card is checked. Pays 1-1 instead
of 3-2.
Even-Money- A payoff of 1-1.
Expected Win Rate - A percentage of the total
amount of money wagered that you can expect to win
or lose over time.
Face
Cards - The Jack, Queen, and King of any suit
of cards.
Family Pot - In poker, when everyone at the
table decides to enter a pot
Fifth Street - In seven-card stud, the third round
of betting is called fifth street because players
have five cards. In hold em , fifth street is
the fifth card on board and the final round of betting.
First Base - At the blackjack table, the position
on the far left of the dealer is considered to be
first base and is the first position dealt with.
Flat Top - A slot machine whose jackpot is always
a fixed amount, as opposed to a progressive.
Flop - In a game of hold em, the three
cards dealt face-up in the center of the table.
Flush - In poker, a hand consisting of five
cards of one suit.
Fold - In poker, when a player declines a bet
and drops out of the hand.
Foul - In pai gow poker, a hand is fouled when
the two-card low hand is set higher than the five-card
high hand, or when the hands are set with the wrong
number of cards. A fouled hand is a losing hand.
Four of a kind - Four cards of the same rank,
also known as quads.
Fourth Street - In seven-card stud, the second
round of betting is called fourth street because players
have four cards. In hold em, fourth street is
the fourth card on board and the third round of betting.
Freeroll- In Poker a tournament that you can
win real money in that doesn't have a buy in.
Full House - In poker, a hand consisting of
a three of a kind and a pair.
Get
Even- Amount you need to bet to break even.
Hard
Hand - In blackjack, any hand that does not contain
an ace valued at eleven.
Hardways Bets,
In Craps Hard Six (two 3's) and Hard Eight (two 4's),
pay 9 to 1, and Hard Four (two 2's) and Hard Ten (two
5's), pay 7 to 1. You win if the Hardway you are betting
rolls before a 7 or a non-pair combination of the
number bet.
High Roller - A player that wagers big bets.
Hit-To take another card.
Hole Card-The dealer's face-down card.
Hot - A player who is on a winning streak,
or a slot machine that is paying out.
Horn Bet- A one-roll bet that combines the
2, 3, 11, and 12.
House Advantage - The casino in-built advantage,
usually gained by paying less than the odds.
Insurance-A
side bet that the dealer has a blackjack. Its
offered when the dealer's upcard is an ace. If the
dealer has a blackjack, the bet is paid 2-1. If the
dealer does not, the insurance bet loses.
Juice-
The bookmaker's commission, also known as vigorish

it Ride- A poker game.
Load up - To play the maximum number of coins
per spin that a slot machine or video game will allow.
Loose - Referred to slot machines that have

Lumpy- A break-in dealer. Called this because

Monkey- Chinese term used in casinos for a

Odds
- Ratio of probabilities.
One Roll Bets- Wagers that will win or lose
depending on the next roll of the dice.
Overlay - A good bet where the player has an
edge over the casino.
Payoff
- The return or payback the player receives for
his or her wager.
Pay Table - The
chart that shows what each win pays
Pallette-The flat paddle used on the baccarat
tables to scoop the cards.
Pass Line Bet- A wager made prior to the come-out
roll that a point will repeat.
Pass Line-The area where a Pass-Line
Bet is placed.
Pit - An area of a casino in which a group
of table games are arranged, where the center area
is restricted to dealers and other casino personnel.
Pit Boss - A supervisor who oversees a gaming
area. Usually supervises more than one table at the
same time.
Point- Dice term for the number rolled on the
come-out roll if a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10. The point
has to be repeated before a seven rolls for the Pass
Line bets to win.
Pocket Cards-
which are sometimes referred to as hole cards or down
cards. These cards are dealt face down. A third card
is dealt to each player face up. Face up cards are
also called up cards or open cards.
Press a Bet - Adding the winnings over the
current bet to 'let it ride'.
Probability - A mathematical calculation that
establishes the likelihood that an event will occur.
Proposition Bet- A bet made on an outcome or
a proposition. These can be anything from statistics
and happenstance in a regular game to personal, one-of-a-kind
bets. Examples of the former include betting on which
team scores first in a match, or which cards are flopped
in poker..
Push - A tie hand between a dealer and a player.
Quarters-
$25 chips.
Rated
- Determination by the casino that a player's
skill level is above average or on a professional
level. A player's rating may be stored on computer
and referred to the pit.
Right Bettor- A person betting on the Pass
Line.
Session
- A period of play at any gambling game.
Seven-Out-Rolling a seven after the point has
been established.
Shill- A person employed by the casino as a
game starter.
Shoe - Device, usually a wooden box, used for
holding and dispensing playing cards to be dealt.
Shuffle Up - Premature shuffling of playing
cards by the dealer.
Split bet In Roulette a two number wager that
allows you to cover two numbers with one bet.
Spooking - Used in blackjack game. The act
of standing behind the dealer to peak at the hole
card and then secretly convey the information to a
partner player sitting at the table. An illegal form
of cheating
Sportsbook- A collection of all the bets taken
on a fixed odds betting event
Stand-To not take any more cards.
Stake-The amount of money that is bet.
Stickman- The dice dealer who calls the numbers
rolled and controls the stick.
Stud Poker-Poker game with no draw.
Surrender-To give up half the wager before
the hand is complete. .
Tell
Play - Observing the dealer's body language and
expressions to determine his hand of cards.
Toke - A tip given to the dealer in the form
of money or chips.
Underlay
- A bad or unfavorable bet.
Upcard - The face
up card of the dealer's initial hand in blackjack.
Vigorish
- (Also abbreviated Vig.) The casino edge or commission
taken by the house.
VIP - A Very Important Person. Usually a big
bettor or a high roller.
Wager
- The amount of money at risk
Working-
A dice term meaning that the bets are in play.
World Bet- A one-roll dice bet on the horn
including the seven.
Wrong Bettor- A dice player who bets on the
Dont Pass Line.
